Bites: Ying Thai 2 @ Lygon St. (Melbourne)

Kelvin is not with us at the moment.  He went off with his friends to a national park in Bright before heading off the Alpines for a ski.  Before he left though, we went for something with a higher temperature to keep him warm during his trip hoho! THAI FOOD @ Ying Thai 2.  This little eatery has long been a famous eatery.  And there is no secrecy to its existence considering the queue during dinner and the lack of tables during lunch.  My fellow friends and readers (I hope there are some >.<) know that I’m a sucker for Thai food.  But only good ones though.  But luckily enough I have not had any sucky ones.  From my trip to Bangkok to S & T in Perth and now Ying Thai 2. Wow!  Undeniably, these were really good food.  Cleanliness in Bangkok well, it is something else but it was not detriment to me in anyway.

IMG_7087 The interior is simple but felt as if we were in some fancy back lane cafe in Bangkok. Liked the drawings depicting village kids spinning the tops like the classics engaged in a road side battle.

We were looking at the menu to decide what would best suit our hungry tummies and looking up and about the papers, we decided to go with the lunch set menu.  I think part of our decision was caused by the pricey cost of the rice.  Its 3 bucks per head =.=!!

What we ordered?IMG_7090This is one of the best Thai food available.  Spicy minced meat with holy basil!  Forgot what it is called but oh boy! Its lovely! The only downside with this version at Ying Thai 2 is the spiciness level was nowhere within Kelvin’s region spiciness.  It is our fault really.  We only asked for mild spiciness.

IMG_7089Xin Ling’s tom yam soup here is every bit as Thai as it should be.  From the clarity to the tastiness.  Its a blast.  Its typically how my uncle Teow Loon would made it from scratch.  I know they had Kafir lime leaf, dried chillies, tomatoes, fish sauce I guess? And other extras hehe.  Really tasted delicious.  Maybe we will go there one more time and have it with extra chilli as Xin Ling confesses to a certain thrill when she is busy gasping for air to cool her burning tongue :)!

IMG_7093This was my Thai red curry with duck meat.  I’ve always avoided curries when I go to Thai restaurants but I knew I was in no position to resist when I saw this curry on the menu.  My first experience of a beautiful duck curry was on a flight to Bangkok on Silk Air.  The roast duck curry I had on the flight was by far the most tantalising meal I have ever had on an flight.  Even beating the juicy steak on the Malaysian Airlines night flight to Australia.  I was only 12 when I had that curry and this curry was close to replicating that experience.  The thick flavoursome curry going nicely with the addition of a rich and aromatic coconut milk.  My god. Its taste was totally smack!  Even after I was done, Kelvin happily spooned the remains into his mouth.  I cannot blame him really.  It is after all a wonderful serve of curry.  The only downside was the serve of duck meat was a little insufficient.  I know I only paid 10 bucks which is far too cheap for a serve of Thai food but I was hoping for a little more meat. ahah

By the end of the meal, we were all filled to the brim.  The serve of rice is really large.  But I almost wanted to order one more serve to go together with my curry but luckily I had some self control ahah.  Finalising this post, Ying Thai 2 on Lygon street is a MUST go.  Unless you are from Thailand that is.  The price for the set menu is really cheap and if you are going for dinner, do not be bothered by the price of the rice.  The serve of meat seems pretty damn large.  And if you’re having curry, rice overload is not an option.  Its definitely a must.  I have not tried but I think the green curry would not be any lesser (in taste) than the red one.

Bites: Sushi Burger @ Exhibition St., Melbourne

What are the few amazing concepts that you have tasted in your life?  Mine has been a number smaller than desired but good news, it is increasing :).  My latest bite was during a meet up with a few female doctors that are going to be very successful in their lives.  I met them when my friend introduced me to them as they needed a place to stay for their medical placement in Perth.   The girls Cheryl and Lynn recommended my friends and I the Sushi Burger restaurant!

IMG_7085Sushi Burger restaurant :D!

Xin Ling’s Crispy Fish burger @ $6.50IMG_7074

My Yakiniku Sushi Burger @ $7.50!

IMG_7076

Or you can pair it up with a bento set with fried chicken the Tasuta Age for $17 bucks!IMG_7078 A few bento sets were ordered as Cheryl got a Croquette sushi burger box and Kelvin had the one with the Gyoza.  But my take on this is that if you’re going to have the sushi burger, I’d recommend you have 2 sushi burgers instead of the bento.  Its a lot more satisfying as the accompanying dishes are only common Japanese food with no perks whatsoever.

Oh and apparently you get charged and extra dollar for each burger if you are dining in because you plan to spend more money on their food =X.  Oh god where is the sense.  All they do is put it on a small plastic plate.IMG_7084Lynn, Ash and Cheryl.  Thanks for recommending the place :)!

IMG_7080The  dessert I ordered!  A strawberry Daifuku.  The strawberry is also known as Ichigo apparently eheh.

Bites: Lindt Cafe @ Chadstone Shopping Centre (Melbourne)

Spain’s well deserved victory over Germany means I deserve to celebrate too! Hoho!  Yesterday I went to Chadstone using the free shuttle bus for visitors.  The bus departs from the intersection of Flinders St. and Russell St. I think.  There was not a lot of sales going on so I did not buy much :(!  But its ok, I managed to try something I’ve been craving for a long long time!
IMG_7052
Lindt Strawberry Fondue.  The assortments that came with it was quite nice :)!  But the chocolate dip was miserable :(!

IMG_7064
The hot chocolate there was more of a learn-how-to experience than a hot chocolate experience.  Lindt gives you a small pot of melted chocolate and a mug of hot milk.  The mixing is left for you to do.  Unfortunately, I did not think this was a very good idea because I want to taste what Lindt calls “excellence”.  Nonetheless lil girl managed to make a nice drink with a “Stussy” looking design on the froth ahah.

We also had a cake to accompany our afternoon tea! And that cake was far too sweet.  Such a poison @.@!!  I have to rant here that Lindt cafe is very well above what the general public perceive as affordable.  Its cakes start from $12.50 onwards and its quality is no more than FAIR.  Fortunately a good companion and a few friends made the disappointment a whole lot easier to forgo.
IMG_7063
My darling :D To those who still do not know who she is yet.  Especially my good friend and my buddy of 10 years Leow Zhan Sheng :)!

My housemate Kelvin!

Om nom nom nom nom!

Luckily for me, my Max Brenner experience today was a whole lot better!  More on my trip soon!!  Lets see what magic Germany conjures tonight!

Bites: Mr Tulk @ Victoria State Library

Breakfast.  Whether it is a necessity or a growing trend, it has definitely  become increasingly popular over the years.  More and more creative chefs are coming out to invent their flavoursome dishes.  Its amazing how much they can come up with considering I myself have not done too much when I go to the kitchen and prepare breakfast .  It has always been kept simple for me.  Cereal with milk, big breakfast with tonnes of lard in the bacon, sausages and sautéed mushrooms or even sandwiches.  However I had something different when I came to Melbourne.  I went to a breakfast place where its chefs try to do breakfast like painting a Picasso.  The cafe is called Mr Tulk.  It is a highly esteemed place for having breakfast among bloggers and city dwellers alike.

IMG_7016The interior is aged.  I liked how it looks.  The mirror behind me was supported on books.  Some of it was tax law.  Can’t blame them cafe owners really.

I went there with Kelvin and Xin Ling after waking up wayyyy past our breakfast time.  We woke up at noon and only reached there at 1.  Luckily they still served breakfast.  We ordered a couple of ala carte dishes.

IMG_7023Xin Ling’s poached chicken with cos lettuce and herb mayonnaise baguette.

IMG_7024Kelvin’s flatbread with meatballs, cheese and sugo!  A definite winner.  Like chicken Parmagiana sandwich just got fused with IKEA meatballs but even better.

IMG_7029

My hash with corned beef with poached eggs served with a dash of mustard.

IMG_7028No matter which way I try to take a picture of it.  It always look miserably small @.@!  But I must insists, as small as it is, quality triumphs over quantity.  I was super sceptical about the whole Dijonnaise mustard thingy but in the end its pungent+peppery flavour really blended well with the starchy hash.  And the eggs were well poached unlike my failed attempts.  The crisp batter along with its hot yummy inside was wohoooooooooooooooooooo when paired with some mustard!

IMG_7030Chicken and lentil soup.  This one was average and it killed my appetite for the evening.  The lentils had me filled to the brim @.@!  It tasted a bit like a Indian styled soup if you’d ask me.  Even Xin Ling and Kelvin felt that way too! Ok put it this way.  Imagine the bread as prata(roti canai) and the soup as dhal. X_X

IMG_7022Hot Choc for the soul.  And gawd that layer of froth is thick!

Over all the breakfast at Mr Tulk is pretty yums but Kelvin and Xin Ling thinks another place does it better.  Hope I have enough time to make to try the other place they mentioned!  But I have to say, this place is quite good if you have to grab a quick bite before heading off to do something else like err… shopping?

Bites: Menya @ Melbourne Central & Big Mama @ Swanston St.

Speak of Japanese food in Melbourne and I will most probably diss its authenticity.  However, since I have reached Melbourne last Thursday, I’ve eaten at two of these restaurants. Some bloggers even label these restaurants as “fake Japanese”.  Hahah I really cannot withhold my laughter when I read these post.  But then again, in food its final judgement always lies within its taste.  Good or bad.  The first restaurant is a classic that the guys and I have liked since the first time we visited Melbourne two years ago.  This little outlet situated along the few Melbourne Central exits facing Swanston street has the most unauthentic Dons I’ve ever eaten but damn it tastes good.

IMG_6765The kitchen is not Japanese, its Chinese. And the logo, I recently noticed is a cute fat piglet! :D

IMG_6769The Gyu Don!  Not like I have not had better but this one tastes really good! And.. cheap!!

IMG_6776The Curry Katsu Don!  Mmm the fried chicken was nice but the curry was OK only.  Again, Samurai sets unachievable benchmark for half a decade.

IMG_6778Gyoza!  My first few picks since I ate at Menya! This was Chee Rong’s recommendation.  I liked it too!

Lastly,IMG_6777This Agedashi Tofu, is not your common fried bean curd with Soy and radish mix.  Instead they put use a sauce which tastes like Tonkatsu sauce and topped it with pickled ginger @.@! The old one tastes a lottt better I have to say.  But this one was not too bad!  Overall this place is a whole lot of love.  The only problem I had in my recent encounter was that the scrapped the burnt bits off the pot and served it :(!

The second restaurant on the other hand is something my friends in Melbourne introduced to me when we finally had a small reunion last Sunday.  Its called Big MaMa and its just located along Swanston St. near the old public bath area. And ohh yeah babehh!! Big Mama is big on taste!

IMG_7003Xin Ling, Kelvin and I visited the restaurant for dinner again today and we ordered several MUST TRY dishes according to bloggers and friends.  But before our dishes arrived, my friends and I found the appetizers served to be appealing to youngsters who are not too amazed with the Korean Kimchee.

IMG_7004Crispy crispy something that was yums!

IMG_7005This omelette was not salty but it was delectable!  So glad my buddies introduced this place to me :D!

After all the appetizers were out, the mains did not take too long to arrive!  Then comes judgement day!

The Good:IMG_7010Yumm!  The Chilli Chicken Kaarage!  Not the real thing but I liked how the chicken was all crispy and coated with chilli sauce!

The Mediocre:IMG_7012The Stone Pot Herbal Spring Chicken was the Mediocre dish.  The glutinous rice stuffing was poorly cooked and the herbal taste was not up to my expectations!

The Bad:IMG_7007The Teriyaki Chicken was a highly recommended by bloggers and I must assert that this is =X.  I did not like it even a little bit.  Its more of sizzling hot plate chicken rather than Teriyaki.

Other dishes I had in my previous visit include the Sweet and Sour fish, the Chap Ge (noodles) and the Beef with bean curd in Clay pot.  I loved the Chap Ge and the Beef in Clay pot soup in particular!

Overall its amazing how even the most unauthentic Asian food tend to be delicious when the combination is good.  Not the real taste but the flavour is definitely attraction!  Everyone loved it and I believe its going to have a lasting impression! (and that includes the horrible teriyaki chicken)

Melbourne Trip II: Queen Victoria Market

Its been a hectic week with little sleep.  But watching Spain advance from one stage to another, however makes up for that.  My first few days was spent around the city for shopping and eating.  One of the places where I had my very first meal was at the Queen Victoria Market.

Morning brekkie:
Bratwurst to share!
IMG_6696
This place has been here for ages.  And that applies to the crowd too.  Its not the best thing ever but it tastes quite good.

After that Xin Ling and I had:
IMG_6707

Does anyone else remember these little jam filled delights? At only 90 cents, these are Krispy Kreme beaters!!  But these dry guys need a refreshment which is easily found all over QVM:
IMG_6711
xD.

Oh and in my last post I wrote about some Solo performance at the Moon which was totally emo?  There was this other guy playing music in the market and he was fabulous.  He added serenades the atmosphere with a happy feel.  So unlike the performance the other guy did at the Moon.

Ok folks, thats all for now.  Will continue updating as soon as I can because I have tonnes of pictures to post up!
